Why Consider Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication and inhalation measures to relax and make patients more comfortable during dental visits. It’s an excellent choice for Myrtle Beach residents who have a phobia of going to the dentist. We don’t want you to suffer through the agony of a toothache or ignore your oral health. We are committed to being your no fear dentist and keeping your smile a top priority.

Also called pain-free dentistry and sleep dentistry, sedation dentistry provides a relaxed and stress-free state during tooth extractions, root canals, fillings, cleanings, and more. Depending on your unique circumstances, a medication by mouth can be taken prior to your appointment. Oral conscious sedation dentistry and nitrous oxide sedation can help those with dental anxiety in North Myrtle Beach maintain a healthy mouth and good oral hygiene.

Gentle dental care can help the 30% of the population who avoid the dentist due to anxiety and fear. It can help with general dentistry and allow for longer appointment times per visit, thus reducing the amount of times a patient may need to come in for larger-scale procedures.

We are here to make your dentist visit a positive experience. Schedule your appointment today by calling 843-756-2273.

Sedation Dentistry – Types and Methods

Here at Carolina Dental Care, we offer different levels of sedation dentistry and tailor each option to the emotional and physical needs of our North Myrtle Beach patients. For those looking for a little help relaxing, we offer minimal and moderate sedation. For patients with high dental anxiety and extreme stress, we provide safe and effective deep sedation dentistry.

Our dentists are certified in sedation and administer nitrous oxide, prescription medication, and sometimes a combination of both methods. Our goal with gentle dental care is the complete comfort of our patients and to ensure a positive dental experience.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is the formal term for laughing gas, a colorless, sweet-smelling gas that is inhaled through a mask. Nitrous oxide sedation has been a primary means of sedation in dental clinics for many years. The effects are fast-acting, usually taking effect within approximately two to three minutes. Levels can be adjusted for maximum comfort and it is safe with patients receiving 50-70% oxygen with no more than 30% nitrous oxide.
Nitrous oxide dental use is common because it has many advantages. It reduces the gagging sensation, which is very effective for those who have a sensitive gag reflex. It doesn’t have any effects on the major organs, such as the heart and lungs, and it wears off fairly quickly without a “hangover” feeling.
However, there are individuals that are not good candidates for nitrous oxide sedation. Patients with COPD should not engage with this method and patients with exotic chest problems, emphysema, M.S., difficulties with breathing, or a cold, should disclose this information to our staff. A “5 minute trial” can be performed before proceeding into full pain-free dentistry.

Oral Conscious Sedation (Prescription Medication)

Oral conscious sedation at Carolina Dental Care custom tailors prescription anti-anxiety medications with nitrous oxide gas. With this type of sedation dentistry, our North Myrtle Beach patients take a pill or liquid medication before their appointment. This helps with extreme dental anxiety.
During treatment, we use a pulse oximeter to constantly monitor your vital signs. Although patients can answer questions during the procedure, they have little to no memory of the procedure itself. Because the sedative can have lingering effects, it is important that another adult is present to get you to and from your appointment.

Sometimes called pain-free dentistry and sleep dentistry, Our staff will be happy to discuss oral conscious sedation options with you.
